ECO-ARTS SALON

Naomi Steinberg

Naomi Steinberg tells stories in order to "walk down a bit of the road together".

For Naomi, connecting with four year olds is as marvelous and unique an experience as connecting with 84 year olds - both are possible through storytelling. In classrooms, rainforests, festivals and conferences, she has over 13 years experience facilitating creative engagement workshops with diverse communities. The past 9 years of her life have been closely focused on storytelling and performance and in her own words “to be a storyteller, first you have to be a story-listener”.

Naomi’s recent appearances include The Orell Fuessli Bookshop in Zurich, Le Jardin D’Alice in Paris, The FOOL in Toronto and the Vancouver Fringe Festival. Naomi has also developed workshops for schools in Vancouver, Israel, Switzerland and India as well as for the Cortona conference in Italy. (www.naomi-eliana.ca)

Vancouver Society of Stortelling's ELEMENTAL initiative

As Executive Director of the Vancouver Society of Storytelling (VSOS), Naomi has developed an initiative titled ELEMENTAL, which uses stories about the elements (air, earth, water, fire, metal) as the metaphoric access point for an intergenerational story-share and workshop series.

During the ELEMENTAL: earth workshop series, hosted in part at the Native Education College, elder storytellers indigenous to the land will share stories of the earth and plants. Extracts from these stories will be represented in a cob ‘storytellers’ bench’  built by community members in Robson Park (13th and Kingsway). This site is an important geographic locater as it is part of a watershed from which St. George Creek begins to flow towards the False Creek Flats, networking with many other underground streams along the way. The ‘storytellers’ bench’ is in support of community groups who have been working towards day-lighting the creek.
